Child found dead at burned home in Covina

Police in Covina continue to investigate the tragic death of a child that occurred in the 100 block of East Italia Street shortly before 3:30 a.m. Friday.

A woman believed to be involved in the death of the unidentified boy was taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation after a Covina police sergeant saw her running in the middle of the street at 300 N. Second Avenue partially clothed.

Police say the woman had blood spatters on parts of her body but had no injuries and was incoherent. They say she was uncooperative with officers and refused to give them any information on her identity, residence, and purpose. She even attempted to run away from officers, police say.

During questioning, the woman made statements that led officers to believe there was a victim and eventually identified where she lived and rushed to investigate, according to authorities.

"Assisting officers immediately responded to the 100 block of East Italia Street, where they discovered a small fire in the second story of the townhouse...They made entry and discovered a deceased
juvenile. No other persons or victims were in the location," said Covina Police Sgt. David Rodriguez.

The woman has not been identified by police.

Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to call Detective Tim Statler at 626-384-5622.
