Bibles untouched by flames that destroyed 90-year-old NC church
MOUNT HOLLY, NC (WJZY) - Church members are calling it a miracle after two bibles were found seemingly untouched by flames that destroyed a long standing church Thursday in Mount Holly.
The fire broke out just after 4 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church located on S. Main Street.
Mount Holly Fire said crews were able to rescue two bibles after battling the blaze. Despite the heavy damage the church suffered, they say the bibles were completely untouched by the fire.
The fire caused extensive damage and caused the church's roof to collapse.
A photo taken by a church member showed heavy smoke rising from the structure as crews worked to control the blaze.
Dr. Kendall Cameron, pastor of First Baptist Church tells FOX46 Charlotte that the congregation is hoping they can save a cross that hangs in the choir loft.
Multiple witnesses indicated they head authorities claiming that the fire started in the church's attic. Hours later, crews remained on scene putting out hot spots.
Officials have not said what caused the fire. When asked if a lightning strike caused the blaze, fire officials said they needed to examine footage and film taken from the scene to determine the cause.
While the church is estimated to be about 90-years-old, Cameron went on to say that First Baptist is likely as old as the town of Mt. Holly itself.
