Banning school official arrested in sex case
(FOX 11) - The dean of students for a school in the Banning Unified School District has been arrested and accused of sex crimes. Detectives worry there may be more victims that have not come forward.
Charles Patrick Mayer - A 55 year old teacher who was, according to the superintendent of the Banning Unified School District, such a likable guy he was elevated to school dean at Nicolet Middle School just this year after a successful job interview.
Police say they'd been using social media sites as part of another investigation. They were surprised when Mayer showed up on their account chatting with someone he believed to be an underage boy.
According to investigators, he initiated a call with who he believed to be a 14-year old boy. But, that turned out to be an undercover cop! The detective continued the conversation over the next five days with the man who - police say - sent nude pictures of himself to the decoy and then made plans with him in order to try to get to gather and have sex.
Mayer was arrested in Rancho Cucamonga where the two made plans to meet. It's after that that the district a notice to parents, to explain authorities did not believe the case involved the district or any of the students in it. And, he's not at work right now. As the Superintendent explained, "Mr. Mayor has been placed on administrative leave … without pay."
Parents we talked with are all upset saying things like, "I think it's horrible," and "I'm disgusted."
Mayer was arrested and booked in the case Friday. Police worry he may have done the same thing before. He's being held in lieu of a million dollars bail.
