Argument at Pomona 99 Cent Discount store leads to shooting

A Pomona man is behind bars after police say he got into an altercation with a 99 Cent Discount store employee, took out a firearm, and fired two shots.

The incident happened on Dec. 9, 2018 at about 1 p.m. Surveillance video from the store shows the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Angel Valenzuela, arriving and parking in a handicapped zone outside the store. He exchanges some words with a couple of people outside before entering the store, getting into an argument with the store employee who pulls out a gun, and exiting the store.

The suspect is seen going back to his car and returns to the store with a gun of his own. He eventually gets back into his car and drives away.

On April 2, 2019, the Pomona Police Department Special Investigation Unit pulled Valenzuela over and searched his car where they found evidence linking him to the incident, police said. A search warrant was also issued for Valenzuela's home and the firearm used in the crime was located, according to authorities.

Valenzuela was booked into Pomona City Jail after his arrest and faces several criminal charges, including felon in possession of a firearm, assault with a deadly weapon, and assault with a deadly weapon with a firearm.
