Arcadia pro tem mayor sparks controversy, says basketball courts attract undesirable 'type'

There’s controversy over whether or not to build basketball courts at Eisenhower Park in Arcadia.

The city's pro tem mayor, Roger Chandler, opposes any courts saying he doesn’t like the “type” of people they attract, describing them as “unsavory people.”

Community members are outraged over the comments, calling them racist and are demanding the construction plans for the $6.3M renovation to include courts.

Chandler says the courts led to unsanctioned basketball tournaments where people were cursing and infringing on people picnicking.

A vote passed 3-2 to do away with the basketball courts and build a baseball diamond instead that will allow for plenty of picnic space.

Another public meeting is set for September 3.
