A principal's plea becomes an embarrassment of riches
Bravo Fox 11 news fans!
Friday, Woodrow Wilson High School Principal Luis Lopez told his Facebook friends that about 20 of his students needed prom dresses. That Facebook post eventually made it to Fox 11 and shared on FoxLA.com
Right away offers of dresses came in to the school's office. He even got a call from someone in Atlanta willing to overnight prom dresses.
Monday afternoon, girls like Sophia Ao went through about 60 dresses to find just the right one. If not for the donated dresses, she would have skipped prom. "I really didn't see myself going because of financial issues. I didn't want to admit that."
Eileen Ortega was planning on picking a dress out of her closet to go to prom. "Something plain and short, not fancy." Now, she has two gold gowns to choose between.
Not only dresses, there were also donated shoes, bags, and jewelry.
There are a couple of boys who need prom attire too. And just in while we were shooting our story, a tux shop called and offered tuxedos for 10 students.
There is such an embarrassment of riches, Principal Lopez will donate whatever is left over to other high schools in the area.
Woodrow Wilson's prom is this Friday.
