2 killed in freeway crash in Santa Ana
SANTA ANA, Calif. (FOX 11 / CNS) - Two people were killed Thursday morning in a crash that involved a wrong-way vehicle and closed all northbound lanes of the Santa Ana (5) Freeway just south of the Garden Grove (22) Freeway in Santa Ana.
The crash involved a Kawasaki motorcycle and a Jaguar, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Florentino Olivera.
The collision occurred just before 4 a.m. when the Jaguar, which was going southbound in the northbound carpool lane, crashed into the motorcycle just north of Broadway, Olivera said.
The Jaguar caught fire and burned the driver beyond recognition, Olivera said.
The motorcyclist, who was also killed on impact despite wearing all of the required safety gear, was a 36-year-old Santa Ana resident, Olivera said. His name was not immediately released as authorities were working to notify his relatives, Olivera said.
The HOV lane is guarded on both sides by concrete so there was "nowhere for the motorcyclist to go'' to avoid the collision, Olivera said.
