15-year-old boy struck and killed by vehicle in Lancaster

A 15-year-old boy was fatally struck by a vehicle whose driver had swerved to avoid crashing into a pair of stopped vehicles in Lancaster, and the driver was injured, authorities said Friday.

An initial investigation showed the driver may have been intoxicated when he struck the teen near the intersection of West Avenue L and 32nd Street West, according to the Lancaster Sheriff's Station.

Two cars had stopped to let the family cross when a third car swerved to avoid a collision, Lt. Dan Nagelmann of the Lancaster Sheriff's Station said. The driver ended up flipping several times and striking the boy as he was crossing.

The driver and the teen were taken to Antelope Valley Hospital, where the boy died from his injuries overnight.

Family members identified the teen as Adrian Smith.

The driver may face DUI charges pending toxicology reports, authorities said.

The teen's mother, BriiNanii Mammi, set up a GoFundMe page to raise $10,000 for funeral expenses.
