11-year-old Fontana boy dies following bicycle accident with friends

An 11-year-old boy died on Sunday following a bicycle accident, Fontana police said Monday.

Authorities said the boy was riding his bicycle with his friends inside an apartment complex when the front tire of his bike collided with the rear tire of his 8-year-old friend's bicycle. The 11-year-old struck the handlebars and fell from his bicycle, authorities said.

The accident happened around 3 p.m. Sunday at an apartment complex located in the 9200 block of Citrus Avenue in Fontana, Calif. police said.

The victim's mother attempted to transport him to the hospital. She stopped at San Bernardino and Juniper where medical aid was summoned. Paramedics arrived and began providing medical aid to the boy. He was ultimately transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, police said.

Neither child was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision but investigators said it does not appear to be a factor in his injuries.

The boy's name has not been released at this time.

"This is a tragic accident and our thoughts are with the families involved," Fontana police said in a press release. "Please take this time to talk about bicycle safety with your children."
