101 freeway reopens in Boyle Heights after pursuit driver struck, killed

A man suspected of stealing a vehicle was killed Wednesday during a pursuit when he fled on foot and was struck by a vehicle on the San Bernardino (101) Freeway in Boyle Heights.

A California Highway Patrol unit attempted to stop a possibly stolen black Toyota around 3:05 a.m. on the northbound 101, said CHP Officer Francisco Villalobos.

The driver, who police estimate was 25 years old, crashed while taking the Fourth Street exit. The suspect then fled the vehicle on foot and ran onto the freeway where he was struck and killed by a vehicle, Villalobos said.

No one else was hurt.

The transition roads of the northbound Santa Ana (5) Freeway and the westbound Pomona (60) Freeway to the northbound 101 were closed so an investigation could take place, Villalobos said.
