A carbon monoxide detector alert at a senior housing project in Whittier led to the discovery of a woman's body, police said.

The grisly discovery at the Seasons at the Hoover on the 7000 block of Greenleaf Avenue took place around 1 p.m. Thursday, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The deceased woman appears to be in her 70s, the coroner's office reported. Her name was withheld pending family notification. Coroner's spokeswoman Sarah Ardalani told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune foul play did not appear to play a role in the woman's death. The cause of death will be determined by an autopsy.

It appears a maintenance worker used a key to get into the apartment where the alarm was ringing and discovered the body, Whittier police Lt. Jay Tatman told the newspaper.

There's no word yet if carbon monoxide was detected in the building.
