Woman killed in fiery crash near MacArthur Park
LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A young woman was killed Saturday morning in a violent single-car crash that ended with her car overturned and burning in the Westlake area, a police sergeant said.
The crash occurred at 2:05 a.m. in the area of 7th and South Lake streets, near MacArthur Park, according to Sgt. Danielle Wells, watch commander at the Los Angeles Police Department's Central Traffic Division.
The victim was identified by police as 26-year-old Brittany Baker of Los Angeles.
"The driver was going west on 7th Street and just past Lake Street she apparently lost control of her car and first hit a light pole,'' Wells said. "The force of the crash sent her careening into a nearby building and then into a U-Haul truck.''
At that point, Wells said, the vehicle overturned and started smoking. Police officers arrived at the scene and tried to put the fire out with an extinguisher. The car burst into flames but the officers managed to pull the woman out of the car first, Wells added.
They tried to revive her but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
No other injuries occurred.
