Woman Dies, 2 Hospitalized After 'Date Rape Drug' Overdose In Venice

VENICE (FOX 11) - LAPD detectives are looking into the death of a 44-year-old Norwegian woman after she is believed to have overdosed on a "date rape drug" when she and her roommate met two guys at a home in Venice Friday night.

Just a block away from the ocean, police closed off 23rd Street at Speedway as they investigated the overdose.

Police say the deceased and her roommate, a 25-year-old Norwegian woman, had just met the two men they were "partying" with.

"When the fire department came out here, they had three separate victims who all had ingested a drug. They were all taken to local hospitals. Unfortunately, one of the victims passed away at the hospital," LAPD Lieutenant John Radtke said.

The drug that Radtke says the women and a 28-year-old man ingested is believed to be GHB, commonly known as the "club drug" or "date rape" drug before drinking and spending time in the hot tub.

"It does appear that everyone used this drug voluntarily," Radke said.

Officers say the 911 call came in around 4:46 a.m. Saturday. Paramedics were able to regain pulses for the man and 25-year-old woman, but the 44-year-old was rushed to an area hospital in full arrest. She was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

Detectives came by later in the day to pick up the ladies' purses.

Neighbors say they're saddened over what happened.

That's horrible, and I'm sure the guys that they were with have that to live with," Janice Davis, said after stopping to see what happened.

Paul Bailey lives nearby. He says he didn't hear any commotion until police arrived in the morning.

"It's sad when these things happen, but you live down in Venice you see a bit of everything," Bailey said. He's lived in the area for 30 years.

The man and woman who were also transported to the hospital are currently in stable condition, but detectives say it was a very close call for them.

The 4th person, a man, is okay -- but is upset over what happened. He and his sister spoke off camera with FOX 11 reporter Christine O'Donnell.

No charges or arrests have been made.
