Wellness in Watts and the living legend behind it all
(FOX 11) - If Watts has a living legend it is surely Bill Coggins.
He is 90-years-old now, but it was 50 years ago that he was tasked by Kaiser Permanente with launching the Watts Counseling and Learning Center.
In September the Watts Counseling and Learning Center with celebrate its 50th Anniversary with a gala.
It all began back in 1966. The Watts Riots were fresh on everyone's minds. Bill Coggins was a psychiatric social worker hired by Kaiser Permanente to create a first of its kind counseling center in Watts.
He says, before the center there was nothing nearby for residents.
Now there is counseling, education programs, a pre-school, and internships. Coggins truly believes they are saving young lives.
Even though it is funded by Kaiser Permanente one doesn't need to be a health plan member to receive services.
