A man tried to rob a 7-Eleven store and stabbed two employees Friday, one fatally, before being taken into custody nearby, police said.

The crime occurred about 9:15 a.m. at Laurel Canyon and Chandler boulevards, said Los Angeles police Officer Rosario Herrera.

The workers -- a man and a woman -- were transported for hospital treatment, where the man died and his co-worker was listed in critical condition, Herrera said. Their names were not immediately released.

Police arrested the suspect after setting up a perimeter in the area, Herrera said. His name was not immediately available.
