The dangers of giving pets as surprise Christmas presents

It's tempting to give a puppy or kitten as a holiday gift, but some animal rescuers say that's not a good idea because those animals often end up in shelters several months later when the family can't care for the pet any longer.

Best Friends Pet Adoption Center instead recommends giving a gift card that covers an adoption fee, as well as pet supplies if you want to give the gift a furry friend.

The adoption center is currently running an adoption promotion called 'Tis the Season to Snuggle where $25 for any pet covers spay/neuter, vaccinations and microchipping.

The center encourages anyone interested in adoption to bring the whole family to make sure everyone is on board with a new family member.

Best Friends Pet Adoption Center is located at 15321 Brand Boulevard and is even open on Christmas Day from noon to 5 p.m.
