San Bernardino officer killed in crash with suspected drunk driver
ONTARIO, Calif. (AP / FOX 11) - An on-duty San Bernardino police officer was killed early Thursday when his patrol car was struck by a suspected drunken driver who ran a red light at an intersection, officials said.
The cruiser was T-boned shortly after 2 a.m. as Officer Bryce Hanes, 40, left the West Valley Detention Center and drove south on a main thoroughfare in Ontario, San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said.
The other driver blew through a red light while heading east and slammed into Hanes' car, Burguan said.
Hanes, a 12-year veteran of the department, suffered massive injuries and was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the chief said at a news conference.
