Rialto PD officer hits pedestrian while responding to call

A male pedestrian was struck by a Rialto Police patrol car that was responding to a call for service Sunday night. The incident occurred at the intersection of North Cactus Avenue and West Rosewood Street sometime between 9:00 and 9:30p.m., Rialto Police Department Sgt. David Shepherd said.

The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment but his condition was unknown at this time.

A witness who noticed the crash said that the pedestrian was just crossing at the intersection when he was struck and launched several feet into the air. He was unsure whether the lights and sirens on the patrol car were on at the time of the crash.

The pedestrian was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center where he is being treated for his injuries. The Rialto police officer driving the patrol car was not injured and is now cooperating with the California Highway Patrol who is now conducting the investigation.

The witness reported that Rialto police cars often speed through this area.
