'Pilots N Paws' flyway rescues 300 animals from 'kill shelters'

About 300 dogs and cats were flown from a dozen rescue shelters in Cobb County to new homes across the United States.

As part of the "Pilot N Paws" project, 75 pilots set out on "freedom flights" Saturday morning, delivering the animals from "kill shelters" to new foster and permanent homes in New Jersey, Florida, Ohio, Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Organizers say 5,000 pilots and 12,000 non-pilot volunteers have assisted with the project since 2008, saving more than 100,000 lives.
