Mountain lion spotted overnight in Simi Valley following deadly dog attack

Authorities Friday cautioned residents in a Simi Valley neighborhood to keep their small pets inside after several reported mountain lion sightings and a deadly pet attack.

In addition to multiple mountain lion sightings, officials say coyote sightings are also common in the area.

A mountain lion that appeared to be emaciated was seen in the cul-de-sac of Bluebird Circle early Friday near the intersection of Yosemite Avenue and Alamo Street, neighbors said.

Officials believe it may be the same big cat that attacked two dogs and killed one.

The deadly attack occurred just before 2:30 a.m. Thursday on Evening Sky Drive, which is located a half-mile away from Bluebird Circle.

A few hours before the deadly attack, Michael Chang said he was walking his dog when it was attacked by a big cat, and that the mountain lion attempted to enter his home through his dog’s door.

The seemingly underweight mountain lion has a long tail and appears to be wearing a tracking collar.

Fish and Wildlife officers believe the cat is an 8-year-old female mountain lion whose tracking device stopped working two years ago.

Also Thursday around 2 a.m., surveillance video captured a mountain lion in North Hollywood, which is about 25 miles away from Simi Valley.

Officials were unsure how the mountain lion ended up in the area since there are no hills or mountains nearby.

Authorities recommend that residents keep their small dogs and cats inside and asked parents not to leave their small children unsupervised.
