Man shot dead behind wheel of his car in Santa Ana
SANTA ANA, Calif. (FOX 11 / CNS) - A gunshot victim whose car weaved across a road, nearly hitting a bicyclist early Thursday, died soon afterward of his injuries, Santa Ana police said.
The near-crash into the bicyclist occurred about 5:30 a.m. in the 3000 block of West Fifth Street, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.
"The woman saw this car weaving across the road and thought the man was drunk,'' Bertagna said. "She managed to get out of the way and wasn't hurt. But when police arrived at the scene, they found a bullet hole through the back window of the car which (had) hit and killed (the) driver.''
Bertagna said police don't yet know the driver's identity or where the actual shooting took place, nor do they have a motive. The victim appeared to be in his 20s or 30s.
Fifth Street, between Susan and Fairview streets, was shut down for the investigation until just before 11 a.m.
Anyone with information was asked to call Santa Ana police at (714) 245-8049.
