Man in custody after barricade situation in Santa Monica

A man armed with a rifle is in custody after barricading himself behind a dumpster in a Santa Monica alley.

Officers were dispatched to the area of 18th street and Santa Monica Blvd. around 1:30 a.m. Friday after receiving reports of a man yelling and screaming.

As officers made their way into the alley they noticed a man who was armed with a rifle. Officers ordered the suspect to surrender but he refused and barricaded himself behind a dumpster, Santa Monica Police say.

SWAT and members from the Crisis Negotiation Team arrived on scene to get the suspect to surrender and put his weapon down. Police say the suspect told officers he had “multiple weapons”.

The suspect eventually put his rifle down and ran from the scene, that’s when a K-9 was deployed.

The suspect was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital. Police say he had an Air Soft Rifle on him.

An earlier version of this story states the suspect was barricaded inside a Maserati dealership
