Man dead following deputy-involved shooting in Artesia

A man attacked a pair of sheriff's deputies, using a knife to inflict cuts on their hands, and was then shot to death in a deputy-involved shooting in Artesia, authorities said Monday.

The shooting occurred at 9:35 p.m. Sunday in the 22900 block of Droxford Street at Elaine Avenue, Deputy Kelvin Moody of the Sheriff's Information Service said.

Deputies from the Lakewood Sheriff's Station responded to the area because a suspicious man in an SUV was reported looking into parked vehicles, Moody said. A second call indicated the man drove onto a lawn, abandoned the SUV and fought with someone before walking away.

Deputies located the man between two residences, the deputy said, adding: "The suspect was uncooperative, physically attacked deputies and a fight ensued.''

Deputies attempted to use a Taser on the suspect but it was not effective, Moody said. "The suspect armed himself with a knife and used the knife to cut two of the deputies in their hands, at which time a deputy-involved shooting occurred.''

"The suspect was struck at least one time in the torso,'' Moody said. "He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.''

Sheriff's homicide detectives were investigating, Moody said. The District Attorney's Office will investigate as well.
