Local LA designer making his own fame dressing up superstar singers

Star singers need superstar wardrobe on the red carpet. Meet one designer finding his own fame dressing a who's who on the mic. Elie Madi designs can be found on Melrose in West Hollywood, and on stars like Jennifer Lopez.

Proving he is a go-to guy for glam, 2019 Grammy nominee and seven-time Grammy winner Toni Braxton wore Elie Madi on the red carpet.

Madi, and his line Yas Couture, has made dresses worn by Ashanti, Carrie Underwood, Mel B, Gwen Stefani, Katy Perry, Thalia, and Ciara, to name a few. His couture dresses are regal with their beads, sequins, flow, femininity, and sensuality. Slideshow.

"I like details, I don't like simple. I like a little complicated," said Madi.

In Los Angeles, Madi is based at For The Stars Fashion House on Melrose near La Brea. Madi is a fixture on the LA runways during LA Fashion Week. He is from Lebanon and has his own store in Kuwait.

Madi started designing when he was 16 years old.

"My father was an architect," Madi said. "I was amazed by his drawings."

Madi says it was For The Stars Fashion House that put him on the entertainment icon map. "Meeting (owner) Jacob was a big step in my life. It's when I met all the celebrities and started working with the big stars."

Jacob, who goes by his first name, says Madi's work is "very intricate. He's very unique. The combination of material, of course, the crystal work. It looks beautiful on the stage, on the red carpets. I told him from the first day we met. I saw this coming."

Madi's shining moment was the 2018 Jennifer Lopez music video, El Anillo. She'd worn Madi during her days as a judge on American Idol. When Madi first saw JLo in his dress he thought "wow, I did it!"

In the music video, Lopez looks like a goddess in a diamond dress. Madi said, "she was amazing, she looked amazing. It was an amazing feeling to see a video that the world is watching."

Madi, and Yas Couture, will be on the LA runway for LA Fashion Week in March 2019.
