Huntington Beach pursuit ends in fiery crash, suspect killed
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (FOX 11 / CNS) - Authorities are investigating the scene of a crash in the Cajon Pass at the end of a pursuit that left a Huntington Beach officer with a gunshot wound.
Huntington Police officers responded to a home in Huntington Beach for reports of a domestic violence incident. When they arrived, two officers encountered a man who proceeded to get into a car and drive away from the residence.
During the chase, the suspect made a u-turn in his car, pulled a handgun and fired several shots at the officers. a bullet actually struck the badge on one officer's uniform, which he said ultimately saved his life.
Police fired back as the man took off on a pursuit across Southland freeways. The pursuit continued on the northbound 15 Freeway in the Cajon Pass where suddenly the suspects car veered off the road and caught fire.
The man later died from injuries sustained from the fiery crash. His identity is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin.
Orange County sheriff's deputies are investigating the shooting exchange.
