Graphic video: Coyote attacks dog in Rancho Cucamonga backyard

A dog owner in Rancho Cucamonga discovered his dachshund had been attacked by a coyote while watching his home security camera.

Gregory Schmauss said one of his dachshunds, Brandie, went outside when she sensed an intruder in the area. The coyote had jumped the 7-foot wall into the family's backyard.

The family's two other dachshunds, Oliver and Riley, heard the dog barking and also went outside to investigate.

"Oliver saw a coyote approaching Brandie from behind and chased the coyote, which undoubtedly saved her life," Schmauss said.

Footage shows the coyote turning on Oliver, grabbing him and carrying him off. The dogs then chased after the animal, and it dropped Oliver.

Both Riley and Oliver were taken to an emergency animal hospital in Upland. Schmauss said Riley was treated and is still recovering. Oliver did not survive the attack.

"Our home security cameras caught all of this as it happened," Schmauss said. "We did not know how our dogs were injured until we saw the video minutes later."

The family lives north of the 210 Freeway, and cautioned other pet owners to be "very aware" and try to keep an eye on pets as best you can.
