A dog was shot by police and killed at the beach in Venice Friday, and a bullet struck a woman tourist in her leg as she pedaled past the scene on a bicycle.

The shooting occurred about 3:20 p.m. near Ocean Front Walk at Rose Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

An officer on patrol stopped to speak with a group of people who were accompanied by a large-breed dog, according to Officer Drake Madison of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations Section.

One person in that group became agitated, causing the dog to become agitated and bite the officer, who then shot the dog, Madison said.

The dog -- described by a witness as a pit bull or similar breed -- was killed.

A bullet fired by the officer ended up striking the bicyclist, who Madison said was a tourist.

The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening wound and was expected to make a full recovery, he said.

The bitten officer was treated at the scene, Madison said.

Neither the tourist nor the police officer were seriously hurt.
