Disneyland's 'Tower of Terror' ride gets official closing date

Fans of the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Disneyland's California Adventure have until January 2, 2017 to enjoy the ride before it closes permanently to make way for a new attraction.

Disneyland Resort announced the official closure date on its Disney Parks Blog.

The iconic building at Disney's Anaheim theme park will be turned into a new attraction celebrating the film franchise "Guardians of the Galaxy,'' Marvel Studios officials announced last month.

In the meantime, fans of the Tower of Terror will enjoy "Late Check-Out" from September 9 to October 31 -- meaning riders will experience the attraction in complete darkness.

There will also be commemorative merchandise as well as special food and beverage items throughout that time.

Twilight Zone Tower of Terror opened in 2004 and was based on a similar attraction at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Florida.

The new Disney attraction will feature a free-fall sensation and various visual and audio effects.

"Guardians of the Galaxy'' was one of the biggest box-office hits of 2014. The first sequel, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,'' is scheduled to hit movie screens in 2017.
