Detectives investigating weekend homicide in Santa Ana

Santa Ana police are investigating a homicide that occurred Sunday afternoon and believed to be gang-related.

Officers were called to 300 South Birch Street at about 2:14 p.m. and located the scene of the shooting but no victims or suspects. Witnesses described a suspect firing a handgun from a vehicle.

Eventually, officers were flagged down by two men in the area of Oak Street and 1st Street who directed the officers to a man 20-30 years old suffering from gunshot wounds, according to authorities.

The shooting victim was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not been released.

Authorities say the victim confronted other drivers in the area just before the shooting occurred. Homicide detectives are working with Gang detectives to identify and locate the suspect.

Homicide detectives are asking to speak with anyone that may have seen the suspect in the area before the shooting, was contacted or confronted by the suspect, or witnessed the shooting.
