Cousin of Dwyane Wade killed in Chicago shooting

A woman pushing a baby stroller was killed in a shooting Friday afternoon in the South Side Parkway Gardens neighborhood.

About 3:30 p.m., the 32-year-old victim, Nykea Aldridge, was walking with a baby stroller and a man in the 6300 block of South Calumet, outside of Dulles Elementary School, when two male suspects walked up and fired shots, according to Chicago Police.

The woman suffered gunshot wounds to the head and arm, and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 4:15 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office and police. A relative of the woman took custody of the baby, who was not injured.

Police said the victim was not the intended target.

FOX 32 has confirmed that the woman killed is the cousin of Chicago Bull's star Dwyane Wade.

"Wasn't bothering nobody, just going to register her kids in school and bullets that fly around that have no name decided to find its way to her head," said Jolinda Wade, the victim's aunt.

One of the males who fired shots was being questioned Friday evening, police said.

"We're now in a very, very sensitive grieving place...this is my sister Dianne, that was her daughter which she lost today. She's actually the second child she's lost to gun violence," Jolinda Wade said.

She also said they will continue to push for a community center to help people trapped in the cycle of violence in the city of Chicago.

"We're still going to help and empower people like the one who senselessly shot my niece in the head and all of our young people out there that are senselessly shooting each other. We're still going to try and help these people. To transform their minds and give them a different direction so this thing won't keep happening," Jolinda added.

Family spokesman Pastor Edward Jones says the victim was a mother of four and was walking to register her children for school. He says the family recently moved to the neighborhood.
