Couple critically injured when car crashes into tree

A woman and a man were critically injured this morning when their car crashed into a tree in Long Beach, police said.

The accident happened at Los Coyotes Diagonal and Stearnlee Avenue at 2:37 a.m., said Long Beach police Lt. David Faris. The driver was northbound and lost control of the car, which struck a tree on the center median and
caught fire, he said.

Long Beach firefighters extricated both victims from the car and took them to hospitals, where they were in critical condition but displaying stable vital signs, he said.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.
