Busy freeway transition road in DTLA reopens after big rig crash

A busy freeway transition road near downtown Los Angeles was closed for nearly five hours Monday after a big rig overturned, spilling oil on the roadway and strewing debris over a parking lot below, authorities said.

The crash happened at 2:55 a.m., when the big rig was making the transition from the westbound Santa Monica (10) Freeway to the northbound Harbor (110) Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol. The driver got out of the truck unharmed, the CHP said.

Caltrans crews brought in sand to absorb the oil, and a Los Angeles city street maintenance crew was sent to clean the debris that fell from the transition road onto a parking lot near the Los Angeles Convention Center.

A SigAlert was issued at 3:07 a.m. shutting down the transition road, which was reopened shortly before 8 a.m., the CHP reported.
