Brush Fire Scorches 32 Acres Near 5 Freeway In Castaic

The fire was reported at 2:38 p.m. near the lower crossover, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Firefighters got the call at 2:42 p.m. and were at the scene three minutes later, Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Randall Wright said.

The CHP closed Interstate 5 northbound at Lake Hughes Road, and southbound at CHP Road, five miles south of Lebec near Pyramid Lake. Heavy smoke and fire trucks were on the freeway, officers said.

Fixed wing aircraft were requested to join helicopters deployed in the fire fight, the fire department reported.

The fire scorched 35 acres and was 100 percent contained as of about 5:50 p.m., Wright said.

Firefighters remained at the scene mopping up hotspots, he said.

Two lanes of the interstate were reopened in either direction just after 4 p.m. and one lane in either direction remained closed as of about 5 p.m., according to the CHP.

No injuries were reported and no structures were threatened, a dispatcher said.
