CARLSBAD, Calif. (FOX 11) - A 12-year-old boy was hospitalized with injuries after a single-engine plane crashed Saturday on Carlsbad State Beach, FOX 5 San Diego reports.

The crash happened just after 3 p.m. near the Encina Power Plant when the plane's engine failed as it flew over the water and lost the banner it towed, Lt. Justin McHenry of California State Parks said.

The plane dove toward the beach and crashed, leaving the 23-year-old pilot uninjured, according to FOX 5.

Video from the scene shows a single-engine plane upside down in shallow water.
