Body camera video shows Pasco deputy, K-9 track suspect in swamp

Deputies in Pasco County had to get a little wet and muddy during an arrest Tuesday when a suspect tried to hide in the swamp.

K9 Knox and his handler were among those involved in bringing the man to justice.

"The guy was obviously trying to get into the deepest area he could thinking we wouldn't follow him in," said Deputy Rob Wilkins

He thought wrong. Knox, his handler, and other deputies didn't mind getting their uniforms dirty.

"K9 Knox did a really good job, brought us right to him," said Deputy Wilkins.

The guy in the swamp was 34-year-old Paul Smith, of Brooksville.

Authorities in Hernando County tried arresting him after they said he had stolen tag on his truck. They say Smith had other ideas. He allegedly battered a deputy and drove off, with one handcuff already on his wrist.

A chase ensued in Pasco County and eventually, Smith took off for the woods.

"The reward for [Knox] is to get to the end," Deputy Wilkins said. "He's proud of himself. 'I found the bad guy.' He's so happy."

A woman, Tara Berger was also arrested.

Smith faces several charges in Pasco and Hernando counties.
