3 hurt in San Francisco when taxi cab crashes into newsstand

Three people were seriously injured Tuesday afternoon when a taxi jumped a curb before crashing into a newsstand and shoeshine stand on Market Street in the city's Financial District, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 3:15 p.m. p.m. on the 300 block of Market Street where Market, Sutter and Sansome streets intersect, said San Francisco Fire Lt. Jonathon Baxter.

The driver of the Yellow Cab and two pedestrians were hurt during the incident. It was not immediately clear how the accident occurred or if the driver would be charged. Baxter said authorities were investigating to determine how the crash happened.

The cab driver did not have a passenger and was said to be traveling westbound on Market Street before crashing.

According to SF Fire, all patients have been transported to a trauma center. Their identities were pending, but all are men. An SF General spokesperson said two victims are 59 and 66 years old. They are in fair condition. A 40-year-old male is said to be in critical condition.

The speed limit in that area, which is fairly bustling with foot traffic, is 25 miles per hour. Pictures from the scene showed the cab appears to have knocked the newsstand over during the collision.

Baxter said the cab went onto the sidewalk and crashed into a street light before striking the two adult pedestrians, one of whom was described as the 66-year-old man. A witness told KTVU the two pedestrians who were struck were working a popular nearby shoeshine stand.

Sansome and Sutter streets have both been closed in the area as authorities investigate the crash. Additionally, Market Street between Battery and Montgomery streets is closed in the westbound direction, according to Baxter. Residents and drivers are being asked to avoid the area.

Market street has since reopened after officials told the public to avoid the area due to the investigation and street closures.
