11-year-old hospitalized after being hit by alleged drunk driver in Gardena

GARDENA, Calif. (FOX 11) - An 11-year-old girl was hospitalized on Friday night after being hit by an alleged drunk driver in Gardena, police said.

According to police, the 11-year-old girl was running across the street towards Mas Fukai Park when she was struck by a large SUV.

When officers arrived, they found the girl lying unresponsive in the middle of the street. It appeared her injuries were severe, police said.

Officers immediately secured the scene and began life-saving measures. With the assistance of EMS and Fire personnel, the child regained consciousness and was transported to a local trauma hospital for further treatment.

The driver of the SUV remained at the scene and was arrested for DUI, police said.

Later in the night, officers received word from the doctors that the 11-year-old was in surgery and would make a full recovery.
