1 dead; 1 critically injured in Westlake donut shop crash

A man driving a minivan suddenly veered off the road in Westlake, critically injuring two pedestrians ,and then slammed into a Winchell's Donut House, authorities said.

The crash happened about 3:25 p.m. at 2100 Beverly Blvd., the intersection with Alvarado Boulevard, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey and Los Angeles police Sgt. Kevin Custard of Central Traffic Division.

The motorist struck two male pedestrians who were critically injured and were now in grave condition, Humphrey said.

There's no word if alcohol and/or drugs played a role in the crash, LAPD Sgt. Kevin Custard said.

The deceased victim died at a hospital, Sgt. J. Brown told City News Service.

One of the pedestrians was taken to Los Angeles County Medical -USC Center and the other pedestrian was sent to St. Vincent Medical Center, Custard said.

The driver also was taken to St. Vincent in unknown condition.

The investigation is ongoing, Custard said.

The Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety was en route to determine the structural safety of the Winchell's, Humphrey said.
