Top Property: A house built for the stars; get a look inside the iconic Owlwood Estate

To date, this Holmby Hills Estate is the most historic we’ve had the honor of touring.

“What has happened in this house and the stories, oh my!” says Compass’ Sally Forster Jones who is listing the property with Tomer Fridman, also of Compass.

Forster Jones and Fridman say the Owlwood Estate, as its known, at 141 South Carolwood Drive, has been owned by a few of Hollywood’s biggest names: including actor Tony Curtis who sold it to Sonny and Cher in the 1970s.

Also noteworthy, Marilyn Monroe’s alleged discreet visits to the property. Fridman shows us the underground secret tunnel he says Monroe used to get inside the home that, at the time, was owned by a studio chairman. Your imagination can fill in the details.

The house, in all its Italian Renaissance Revival glory, spans more than 12,000 sq. ft. with nine bedrooms and ten bathrooms. The crown molding, mill and plaster work throughout is all hand carved and dates back to 1936.

Over the years, Owlwood has acquired the adjacent parcels including that of 1950s actresses Jayne Mansfield and Esther Williams.

Today, the property covers ten acres and includes a tennis court and historic pool.

In terms of a buyer, Fridman says, “there’s about one thousand buyers in the world who can afford this. You have to be a billionaire.”

With that said, the asking price for the largest estate in all of Holmby Hills: $115,000,000.
