Snoozing black bear in tree surprises New Jersey residents

A wild black bear sleeping in a tree became the main attraction on New Year's Day for residents in a New Jersey town.

The bear was spotted snoozing in Summit, N.J., which is about an hour outside of New York City -- and became an instant celebrity with phones and cameras swarming.

Police said wildlife officials were notified and warned residents online not to approach the bear.

The NJ Fish and Wildlife Division did not tranquilize the bear because it was up too high in the tree.

It eventually came down from the tree and wandered back into the woods on its own.
