Several shootings during overnight hours in Montecito Heights, Firestone neighborhood

A 21-year-old man was shot and killed in Montecito Heights early Saturday morning. LAPD investigators say a group of people were standing outside the Neighborhood Market on the corner of Avenue 43 and North Griffin Avenue at 1:20 am when someone shot them.

Victor Cortez died in the shooting. His mom says she last heard from him Friday night when he told her he loved her. She said he played a lot of sports and was just about to start a job as a security guard. 

Paramedics rushed two people who were wounded to the hospital. One was suffering a graze wound to his head, the other was shot in the chest. 

Police have not yet released a description of the shooter. 

And in South LA, one man was killed and another injured in a shooting. It happened just after 1 am in the 9000 block of Compton Avenue. Investigators have not yet released their names or information about the shooter. 

The incident happened three days after a drive-by shooting just two miles north in the Florence-Firestone neighborhood that killed two childhood friends whogrew up on the street where they were shot.

Family members identified the two as 23-year-old Jose Flores Velazquez, a Ph.D. student at University of California, Irvine, and 24-year-old Alfredo Carrera, who was about to become a father.
