LOS ANGELES - Southern California counties and cities have set up emergency cooling centers designed to give residents some relief from the heat.
During a typical Southern California heatwave, there are plenty of ways to beat the heat...shopping in an air-conditioned mall, going to a movie theater, swimming in a public pool, or visiting a museum. However, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, none of those options are available.
“These are no-cost, free to the public, they offer air-conditioned spaces, we also offer water. It’s a place to be able to get out of the heat,” said Helen Chavez, Associate Director, LA County Office of Emergency Management.
“Public health experts know and scientists have recognized that heat can be very deadly, so it’s important to be able to get out of the heat if necessary," Chavez said.

All of the centers are taking safety precautions like temperature checks, following social distancing guidelines, and maintaining rigorous cleaning practices.
Chavez added that “Sanitation practices that have been really upped to make sure that there’s disinfection taking place within each of these cooling centers every two hours.”
