Preliminary 3.5-magnitude quake strikes Ridgecrest area Friday morning

A 3.5-magnitude earthquake struck Friday morning in the Ridgecrest area, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. 

The USGS says the quake was reported at 4:52 a.m. about 9 miles northeast of Ridgecrest in Kern County. It was recorded at a depth of about 5.5 miles.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. While there are many variables involved, geologists say damage does not usually occur until the earthquake magnitude reaches somewhere above 4 or 5.
