Person injured following violent car crash into a pole in Van Nuys

Authorities are investigating a single-vehicle crash into a pole Wednesday night that left one person trapped.

The crash happened in the 8000 block of North Sepulveda Boulevard in Van Nuys. The L.A. Fire Department says two people were in a grey midsize passenger vehicle that collided with a light pole. One person reportedly fled before emergency crews arrived.

A second person became trapped in the wreckage and seriously injured when a metal rod impaled his leg, according to LA Fire Department. His identity was not immediately released but officials say the man was taken to a local trauma center in serious condition.

Firefighters reportedly had to cut out the roof of the car to get the trapped person out. No other vehicles are believed to have been involved in the collision, according to officials.

Streets and roadways in the immediate area are closed off while crews clear the wreckage.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. No further details were immediately known.
