Woman doused with gasoline, set on fire by man: Report

A woman was doused with gasoline and set on fire by a man in North Carolina.

According to a report from WRAL-TV, 20-year-old Ashanti Downey suffered second- and third-degree burns on the right side of her body. Downey was rushed to the emergency room on December 16.

Deputies in Harnett County, North Carolina have since arrested 23-year-old Jami Griffin in connection to Downey’s severe burns. Griffin was charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and assault on a female, according to jail records.

At last check from WRAL-TV’s report, Downey is in critical condition. Griffin remains in Harnett County custody.

A GoFundMe page has since been launched to help Downey and her family. According to Downey’s mother on the fundraiser page, Ashanti suffered burns to 70% of her body. While Ashanti remains in critical condition as of December 27, she is off the ventilator, can move her limbs and can talk, her mother said on the fundraiser page.
