Newport Beach Pier shooting: Officers kill homicide suspect after chase from Santa Ana
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - Santa Ana police officers shot and killed a homicide suspect near the Newport Beach Pier Saturday morning after an attack in Riverside County and a police chase through Orange County.
It all started shortly before 3 a.m. in Menifee in Riverside County. Police were called out to a home on Mesa Edge Court after reports of gunshots. When officers got to the house they found a the body of a woman, later identified as 38-year-old Storm Wolf of Temecula.
Detectives identified 45-year-old Jose Velasquez as their suspect, and determined he might have gone to Santa Ana, nearly 60 miles away, so Menifee Police officers reached out to the Santa Ana Police for help. Officers found Velasquez in a car on N. Freeman Street, the department said, and tried to stop him.
Then, police said, Velasquez drove off, and Santa Ana officers chased him all the way to the end of the Newport Beach Pier around 7 a.m.
While it's not immediately clear what happened next, this is where officers shot and killed Velasquez. First responders pronounced him dead at the pier.
Officials said there were multiple people on the pier when the shooting happened.
The pier was briefly closed, but has since been opened. Officials are still investigating the shooting. Anyone who has any information about this case is asked to contact the Orange County District Attorney's Office at 714-664-3964."
