Midday Sunday: The Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs
(FOX 11) - The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is the largest sheriff's department in the United States. Its 9,100 deputies are represented by the Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs.
On Midday Sunday, ALADS president George Hofstetter and vice president Sean Van Leeuwen will discuss a variety of issues beginning with the federal investigations into the actions of Sheriff Lee Baca and Undersheriff Paul Tanaka before their retirements. Tanka was convicted in June of interfering with a federal investigation into the Los Angeles County Jail system. He is scheduled to begin serving a five year sentence this month.
Meanwhile, a plea deal that would have limited Baca to a five month sentence on the same charge has been thrown out by a federal judge for being too lenient. Baca is now pleading innocent and he awaits a trial date. But he is also claiming that he is in the early stages of Alzheimer's Disease which could prevent or severely limit his ability to serve time in prison if he is convicted.
This scandal along with controversies over recent attacks on police, the use of body cameras and early release programs are some of the issues ALADS will discuss.
