LGBT community security after Orlando shooting
Long Beach has one of the largest gay communities in Southern California and what happened in Orlando hit hard on a lot of people hard. Lenny Sinatra, is a case in point. Sinatra and his partner own the Executive Suite, a three-story nightclub with the largest dance floor in Long Beach.
To Sinatra, who is related to Frank Sinatra, says what happened at Pulse in Orlando, just as easily, could have happened here. He thought about beefing up security big time, but said, "I don't want people to come here feeling fearful. I actually yesterday looked online for metal detectors and after looking at I thought why am I doing this… I don't want it to be like a prison.
Frank Rubio is the President of Long Beach Pride. He's looking to increase security at the next Pride Parades and Festival. Says Rubio, "It's a very sad situation right now. When this happened I just wondered what the victim families must be going through this.
Long Beach's openly gay mayor, Robert Garcia, says the city and police are working with gay establishments toward the same goal. That's, "...to ensure people feel safe and that there are exit plans in place. And so we're doing that over the course of days and weeks making sure those soft target areas are taken care of."
