Decomposing body discovered off Rancho Palos Verdes cliffside

The Brief

    • A hiker in Rancho Palos Verdes discovered a person face down on a cliffside on Saturday, Dec. 28.
    • The hiker immediately contacted authorities.
    • When officials arrived at the scene, they discovered a decomposing body. 

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. - Los Angeles County homicide detectives were investigating after a hiker discovered a dead body in Rancho Palos Verdes over the weekend. 

Deputies were called to the 31000 block of Palos Verdes Drive South after someone reported a person down at the cliffside on Saturday, Dec. 28 just before 1 p.m. When deputies arrived at the scene, they found an adult several hundred yards down from the cliffside. 

They were pronounced dead at the scene by LA County Fire paramedics. 

Investigators believe the person fell down the cliff from Dina’s Viewpoint and that they had been dead for quite a while based on the body’s severe decomposition. 

Authorities said the incident is not related to recent events of people found along the shoreline. 

The investigation is ongoing and no further information was available.
