Families displaced in Garden Grove apartment fire
GARDEN GROVE, Calif. (FOX 11) - Thirteen people were displaced and two people were hospitalized after a fire ignited at a two-story apartment complex in Garden Grove Tuesday morning.
The two-alarm fire was reported just before 4:30 a.m. in the 13000 block of Cypress Street located near the intersection of Garden Grove Boulevard and Brookhurst Street. About 40 firefighters from the Garden Grove Fire Department and neighboring Orange County were able to quickly knock down the blaze shortly after arrival by 5:16 a.m., said officials.
The fire started in a single unit when a person was heard screaming and asked for help before a neighbor helped evacuate the building.
Fire officials said there were no smoke alarms inside the apartment unit where the blaze started.
In addition, a power outage was reported at the complex the night before.
Two adults were transported to a local hospital by firefighter paramedics for smoke inhalation and burn injuries. They are both expected to be okay.
The Red Cross was called to assist with the displaced residents.
An investigation to determine the cause of the fire is underway.
